Drug Name: CAPASTAT SULFATE

CAPASTAT SULFATE DESCRIPTION:
CAPREOMYCIN INJECTION (KAP-ree-oh-MY-sin)

COMMON CAPASTAT SULFATE BRAND NAME(S):
Capastat Sulfate

CAPASTAT SULFATE SIDE EFFECTS:
This may cause pain or irritation at the injection site. If it continues or swelling, redness or bleeding occur, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: ringing in the ears, irregular heart beat, change in urination frequency or output, increased thirst, nausea or vomiting, muscle pain, breathing trouble, drowsiness, tiredness, trouble hearing, dizziness, fever, chills, skin rash or itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

HOW TO USE CAPASTAT SULFATE:
CAPASTAT SULFATE: This is given by injection into a muscle. It is usually given once a day for 2 to 4 months then reduced to 2 or 3 times a week depending on your condition and response. It is important to receive each dose as scheduled since antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. It may be necessary to continue therapy for tuberculosis for 1 to 2 years. Stopping therapy too soon may result in ineffective treatment.

CAPASTAT SULFATE WARNING:
Use capreomycin with extreme caution in people with hearing or kidney problems. Other injectable medications used to treat tuberculosis (e.g., streptomycin) should not be used with capreomycin because they will add to the hearing and kidney problems that can occur. Use extreme caution when using other drugs that also cause hearing or kidney problems (e.g., aminoglycosides).

CAPASTAT SULFATE USES:
CAPASTAT SULFATE is used in combination with other drugs to treat tuberculosis infections.

CAPASTAT SULFATE PRECAUTIONS:
Before using this, tell your doctor if you have: kidney disease, hearing trouble, allergies. CAPASTAT SULFATE should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if CAPASTAT SULFATE is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

CAPASTAT SULFATE DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Tell your doctor of all nonprescription or prescription medication you take particularly: certain antibiotics (aminoglycosides or vancomycin), certain anesthetics. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

CAPASTAT SULFATE OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, sensation that the room is spinning, ringing in the ears, and loss of ability to hear high tones.

CAPASTAT SULFATE NOTES:
Laboratory tests and hearing tests will be done periodically while using this. If needed, you may be switched to a drug for this same condition that can be taken by mouth.

MISSED CAPASTAT SULFATE DOSE:
It is important to use each dose as scheduled. If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. If you miss more than one dose, contact your health care provider to establish a new dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

CAPASTAT SULFATE STORAGE:
Store unopened vials at room temperature between 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C). Once reconstituted the solution is good for 48 hours at room temperature or 14 days refrigerated. The color of the reconstituted solution may run from near-colorless to a pale-straw tint. Color may darken over time but this does not indicate a loss of potency.
