MITOMYCIN Drug Information

Drug Name: MITOMYCIN

MITOMYCIN DESCRIPTION:
MITOMYCIN - INJECTION (mitt-oh-MY-sin)

COMMON MITOMYCIN BRAND NAME(S):
Mutamycin

MITOMYCIN SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, skin rash, numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes, purple-colored bands on nails, or unusual tiredness or weakness are common side effects. Not eating before treatment may help relieve vomiting. Changes in diet such as eating several small meals or limiting activity may help lessen some of these effects. In some cases, drug therapy may be necessary to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting. Temporary hair loss is another common side effect; normal hair growth should return after treatment has ended. Contact your doctor immediately, if you experience any of the following symptoms: fever or chills, cough, lower back or side pain, painful or difficult urination, unusual bleeding or bruising, black tarry stools, blood in urine or stools, small red spots on skin, shortness of breath, swelling of feet or lower legs, sores in mouth or on lips, bloody vomit. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

HOW TO USE MITOMYCIN:
MITOMYCIN: This is a potent medication. Take it exactly as prescribed. Tell your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience pain, burning or redness at the place where injected.

MITOMYCIN WARNING:
MITOMYCIN can cause severe blood disorders (e.g., bone marrow suppression, including hemolytic anemia, and especially thrombocytopenia and leukopenia). A syndrome known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (a combination of anemia, decreased platelet count, and nonreversible kidney failure) has occurred. Blood transfusions may make the symptoms of this syndrome worse. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of an infection (such as persistent sore throat or fever), fatigue, easy bleeding or bruising, dark urine, or change in amount of urine.

MITOMYCIN USES:
Mitomycin is used to treat various types of cancer.

MITOMYCIN PRECAUTIONS:
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, any infections, previous anti-cancer treatment, blood disorders, recent exposure to chickepox, allergies. MITOMYCIN can lower your body's ability to fight an infection. Notify your doctor if you develop any signs of an infection such as fever, sore throat, rash, or chills. Use caution with sharp objects like safety razors or nail cutters and avoid activities such as contact sports in order to lower the chance of getting cut, bruised or injured. Avoid touching your eyes or the inside your nose without first washing your hands. Do not have immunizations/vaccinations without consent of your doctor, and avoid contact with people who have recently received oral polio vaccine. MITOMYCIN can affect the production of sperm in men. Therefore, reliable birth control should be used while using this medication. MITOMYCIN is not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Consult your doctor. It is not known if mitomycin passes into breast milk. Because this is a powerful drug and may affect a nursing infant, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

MITOMYCIN DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Tell your doctor of all the medications you may use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially of: "blood thinners" such as warfarin.

MITOMYCIN OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

MITOMYCIN NOTES:
Regular doctor visits are important. Keep all medical appointments. Blood tests will be done to monitor your progress.

MISSED MITOMYCIN DOSE:
It is important to take each scheduled dose of this medication. If you miss a dose, contact your doctor.
