Drug Name: SPS

SPS DESCRIPTION:
SODIUM POLYSTYRENE SULFONATE - ORAL SUSPENSION (SO-dee-um pah-lee-STYE-reen SULL-fun-ate)

SPS SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Unlikely but report promptly: swelling, muscle cramps, dizziness, mental or mood changes. Very unlikely but report promptly: fast/slow/irregular pulse, weakness, muscle spasm. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

HOW TO USE SPS:
SPS: Shake well before each use. Take by mouth, usually 15 grams (60ml or 2 ounces) 1 to 4 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not use salt substitutes without consulting your doctor.

SPS USES:
SPS is used to treat high levels of potassium in the body (hyperkalemia).

SPS PRECAUTIONS:
Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, swelling (edema). SPS should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether SPS is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

SPS DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you use, especially of: calcium-, aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives, certain "water pills" (potassium sparing diuretics such as amiloride), digoxin. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

SPS OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

SPS NOTES:
Do not share SPS with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress.

MISSED SPS DOSE:
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

SPS STORAGE:
